Coldplay back in the studio

Coldplay will release a new album in 2010, according to Chris Martin.

The band are currently at work in their own studio, thought to be a converted church, in London. Speaking in a video interview with Globo.com - which you can watch by clicking below - Martin said he wants to release the album “hopefully this Christmas”. He added that the band are being extra security-conscious to make sure their new material doesn’t leak online.

“There’s only two people in the whole building who know how to open all the recording files,” Martin explained. “Even we [Coldplay] don’t know how to do it. We couldn’t even steal our own music at the moment. You would have to be a computer genius and a great burglar to get into the building, and download it, and mix it.”

The band also denied that the album would be their last for label EMI. “I think we have about 500 more,” Martin initially joked, before adding: “No, seriously, we signed for a lot.”

The album will be Coldplay’s first since 2008’s ‘Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends’.

Muse slam their label over free music streaming stance

Muse

Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme has revealed his band’s disappointment in their record label’s decision to stop licensing acts on the company’s roster for free streaming services such as Spotify and We 7.

Earlier this month Warner Music CEO Edgar Bromfman announced that none of the label’s artists’ future releases would be licensed to the services, as “free streaming services are clearly not positive for the industry” - although already-available back catalogues would remain.

The Devon band, who are one of the biggest acts on Warner Music – also home to REM and Red Hot Chili Peppers - argued that the decision will take their music, and the music of their labelmates, away from the ears of potential fans.

Wolstenholme told BBC Newsbeat, “It’s like taking your song off the radio, isn’t it? The corporations are setting the rules on these things because they’re clutching at straws. They’ve lost so much money on record sales because of the internet.”

He added, “As far as bands are concerned, you just want people to hear your music whichever way they can.”

Kasabian’s Tom Meighan: ‘The internet has killed rock stars’

Monday, February 22nd, 2010 by xavier
Tom Meighan

Tom Meighan

Kasabian singer Tom Meighan has blamed the internet for “killing” rock stars.

The outspoken frontman claims there are no iconic musicians left because artists reveal too much about themselves on blogging websites such as Twitter.

He said: “It’s not like what it used to be like in rock ‘n’ roll. In the 60s and 70s you had the likes of David Bowie and Marc Bolan, and then in the 80s you even had shit acts that were rock stars. Then in the 90s you had the Britpop revival.

“I think - especially in the last three or four years - the internet’s taken a stranglehold and killed off the myth of the rock star now. You know when you used to buy the records and there was the myth behind them? There’s too much on blogs now and I think it’s killed it off. Nobody’s surprised by an interview anymore or anything. It’s quite tragic.”

He also said blogging has taken away the spirit of rock ‘n roll’. He told Bang Showbiz: “There are so many rock stars writing these self pitying blogs and it’s not in the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, it’s like ‘Wow, what rubbish’.”

Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand have started writing new material for their fourth album, frontman Alex Kapranos has confirmed.

The Scottish singer/guitarist told BBC 6music that he and guitarist Nick McCarthy had been working on new songs at McCarthy’s house for the follow-up to last year’s ‘Tonight… Franz Ferdinand’ effort.

“I’ve been round at Nick’s and we’ve been writing some things, and trying to do things in a different way again,” he explained. “You’ll hear it before too long.”

Kapranos added that he was a touch wary about revealing too much about the writing sessions this early on, however.

“Before the last record I talked far too much about it,” he said, “as we had the ideas and I made a vow that I wasn’t going to say anything about what we are actually doing until we’ve done it, and then wait about another three weeks.”

Franz Ferdinand are set to tour Australia from the end of this month, followed by some South American live dates.

Limp Bizkit - soon with a new album

Limp Bizkit - soon with a new album

Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland has revealed that their new album “has a Daft Punk vibe”.

Entitled ‘Golf Cobra’ and due out later this year, the LP is the group’s first since 2005’s ‘The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1)’.

“I think that everyone who hated Limp Bizkit before will continue to hate Limp Bizkit,” Borland told Guitar Edge in reference to the sound of the album. “It’s definitely a fun party kinda vibe, it’s a little like the old stuff but with a Daft Punk vibe thrown in”.

He added: “It’s not like we all of a sudden grew up and started making smarter music. There’s big huge riffs and hopefully catchy lyrics, it’s still about halfway done so we’re waiting to see how the rest of it goes.”

Metallica DVD "Francais pour une nuit"

Metallica DVD

The new Metallica DVD, an actual shiny plastic disc that you can actually hold in your hands, can only be sold online.

‘Francais Pour Une Nuit’ is the first live Metallica release in 10 years yet record stores are forbidden from selling it.

A notice to retailers today stipulated ‘Having been a great success domestically in France, we have now secured the rights to sell this release internationally *_via e-retailers only. _*This is a strict condition of the deal that has been done between UMGI and Metallica’.

Metallica has previously sued fans for downloading their music because they wanted you to be honest and buy their music in stores.

Now they are taking away their product from the very vehicle that supported them through their zany digital outrage.

To really rub it in the face of record stores, the stores today were advised that they had until the end of the day to order the title but if they do, then they can only sell it from their website.

Get Lucky is Knopfler’s sixth studio album and was recorded at the guitarist’s British Grove Studios in West London. The New York Times remarked that the album “radiates wariness and maturity as well as poise,” while USA Today called it “a beauty, full of ripe, haunting melodies and gently vital, folky arrangements that showcase his robust and lyrical guitar work.”
